Brenda Shivers Lecture Series

Dr. Brenda D. Shivers

The Brenda Shivers Lecture Series at the Higuchi Biosciences Center provides a forum for discussion by leading bioscience and biomedical researchers on cutting-edge topics dealing with neurological and neurodegenrative disorders.

Peter Boxer set up a fund to support this series in 2007 to continue the legacy of his former colleague and dear friend Brenda D. Shivers, a University of Kansas alum who received a bachelors of science and doctorate in physiology from KU. Dr. Shivers developed a distinguished neuroscience research career as a scientist at the Rockefeller Institute in New York; the Center for Molecular Biology in Heidelberg, Germany; Tulane University in Louisiana; and Parke-Davis Research Laboratories in Michigan. She helped to discover novel treatments for Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases. In 1998 she left the research she loved due to complications resulting from her battle with multiple sclerosis. She died in 2007.
