Pharmaceutical Aspects of Biotechnology |

As a result of long-standing research efforts and a demonstrated expertise in certain research areas of national interest, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry has been able to establish federally funded training programs in two emphasis areas, "Clinical Drug Analysis of Anticancer Agents" and "Pharmaceutical Aspects of Biotechnology," which are directed by Professors J.F. Stobaugh and C. R. Middaugh, respectively. These programs serve to enhance and compliment the training and educational activities of the department. This Biotechnology Pre-Doctoral Training Program trains pharmaceutical scientists who will have the expertise to assist in the development of biotechnology-derived drug candidates into useful therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In addition to receiving training in the traditional areas of pharmaceutics (e.g., physical, physical organic and analytical chemistry), trainees receive formal didactic training in physical biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as increased exposure to biotechnology research through a Biotechnology Industrial Internship, and a monthly Biotechnology Seminar Series. The trainees receive hands-on laboratory experience through a required course in molecular biology and their biotechnology-oriented dissertation research projects. The research projects emphasize basic research problems, which relate to the formulation, delivery or analysis of biotechnology products.
The faculty participating in this Biotechnology Predoctoral Training Program (see Table 1) have appointments in six academic departments (Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell & Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Chemical and Petroleum Engineering). The faculty representation in this program is not only multidepartmental, but it is also multidisciplinary. The faculty members' areas of expertise include: biophysical chemistry (Professors Larive, Middaugh, Richter, Siahaan, Vander Velde); bioorganic chemistry (Professors Borchardt, Schoneich); medicinal chemistry (Professors Aube, Borchardt); protein chemistry (Professors Borchardt, Schoneich, Richter); immunology (Professors Topp, Wilson); bioanalytical chemistry (Professors Dunn, Larive, C. E. Lunte, S. M. Lunte, Wilson); computational chemistry (Professors Kuczera, Laird, Siahaan); enzymology (Professors Borchardt, Richter); cellular and molecular biopharmaceutics (Professors Audus, Borchardt, Topp); molecular biology (Professors Borchardt, Richter); and chemical/pharmaceutical engineering (Professors Topp, Southard, Subramaniam). The expertise of the training faculty is further broadened through collaborative interactions with other academic and industrial scientists.
Financial support for students in the Biotechnology Predoctoral Training Program is currently available from a training grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), faculty research grants and fellowships. Students appointed as NIGMS trainees must be permanent residents or U.S. citizens.
