Aubé Leads Provost Search

Jeff Aubé, professor of medicinal chemistry, is serving as chair of the search committee formed to find a successor for David Shulenburger, provost and executive vice chancellor. Shulenburger, who has overseen impressive gains in the academic profile of University of Kansas students and a renewed emphasis on effective teaching, announced Sept. 28 that he will step down as executive vice chancellor and provost of the Lawrence campus at the end of June 2006.

Also serving on the search committee are Daryle Busch, Roy A. Roberts distinguished professor of chemistry; and Valentino Stella, distinguished professor of pharmaceutical chemistry.

Stella First Recipient of Technology Transfer Award

Valentino J. Stella, a distinguished professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at KU and inventor of drugs to treat epilepsy and AIDS, was the first recipient of the KU Technology Transfer Leadership Award, presented Nov. 17 at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics.

The inscribed medallion, featuring KU’s Dyche Hall on the front, was presented to Stella for his “dedication to the commercialization and dissemination of technology for the benefit of society.”

The award was presented by Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger as part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the federal Bayh-Dole Act.

Schöneich Named AAPS Fellow

Christian Schöneich, professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, has been designated a fellow by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. Schöneich is internationally recognized as an expert in the area of post-translational protein modification. He joined the KU faculty in 2003 and was named chair of his department earlier this year.

Begun in 1986, AAPS is a professional, scientific society of more than 12,000 members employed in academia, industry, government and other research institutions worldwide.
